All About Peridot

An open green book with a peridot gemstone illustration

Peridot is a striking green gem that is formed in the Earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. Peridot measures a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. It is the birthstone of August.
Some believe peridot to help channel love and abundance, emit positive energy, and bring happiness.

It is unknown where peridot got its name from, but one suggestion is that it originated from the Greek word ‘peridona’, which means ‘giving plenty’.

In Hawaii, Peridot was said to be the tears of the goddess of fire and volcanoes, Pele.

It is thought that the ancient Egyptians believed this stone would protect its owner, deterring evil spirts. Many believe that Cleopatra’s emerald collection was actually made up of peridots instead of emeralds. Peridot is now considered the national gem of Egypt.
